Play Food Cherry Cake Slice

4 Jul

This crochet play food cherry cake is simply formed out of geometric shapes, with the seams joined by dc sts. Use a 5 mm (US: 8) hook and oddments of DK yarn to represent icing (frosting), cake, cherry jam and cherry. Remember to allow for turning chains, as these are assumed rather than noted e.g. ch1 before commencing a row of dc.

Top and Base Triangle

Make one piece with your icing yarn and one with your cake yarn colours.

Chain 5 sts.
Rows 1-3: dc5
Row 4: dc2tog, dc3
Row 5: dc2tog, dc2
Row 6: dc2tog, dc1
Row 7: dc2
Row 8: dc2tog

Back Rectangle

With your icing yarn, ch5 sts.
Rows 1-8: dc5

Bind off and weave in ends.

Sides Rectangle

With your cake yarn (A), ch14 sts.
Rows 1-3: dc14
Rows 4-5: with yarn B (cherry jam) dc14
Rows 6-8: with yarn A dc14

Bind off and weave in ends.

With your cherry jam yarn, make a magic loop of 3 sts.
Rnd 1: 2dc into each st

Add a small amount of stuffing at this point.
Rnd 2: dc2tog to end

Bind off and leave a tail for sewing.

With either icing or cake yarn colours, as appropriate, assemble your crochet play food cherry cake slice by joining seams with dc sts. Start with the back and the base triangle. Next, attach the sides rectangle. Then, add the top triangle – neatly stuffing before binding off. Finally, sew the cherry to the top of the cake and weave in ends. (Note: If you prefer, you could sew the seams instead of crocheting them.)

ch = chain
dc = double crochet (US: single crochet)
dc2tog = dc 2 sts together (US: sc 2 sts together)
st(s) = stitch(es)
