Basic Crochet Flower

16 Mar

Make a basic crochet flower by simply hooking several stitches into the same stitch, to build width and bulk. Petal length is achieved with tall stitches, such as trebles (US: double crochet). Use any yarn with a suitable size hook e.g. DK wool and a 3.5 mm (US: 4) or 4.0 mm (US: 6) hook.

Make a magic loop with 5 dc (or 1 ch and 5 dc in ring).
Rnd 1. 2 dc into each st.
Rnd 2. *2 dc in next st, 1 dc; rep from * to end.
Rnd 3. *1 dc, [1 htr, 5 tr, 1 htr] into next st, 1 dc; rep from * to end.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

If you want to change the colour of the flower centre, change yarns at the end of the first round.

ch = chain
dc = double crochet (US: single crochet)
htr = half treble (US: half double crochet)
tr = treble (US: double crochet)

Flowers make lovely appliques or embellishments. You can also turn them into quick and pretty gifts by glueing or sewing them to hair bands or hair clips. If crochet isn’t your thing, I also have a Simple 5 Petal Flower knitting pattern. ;)
